Rubik cube Battenberg - part yummy cake, part iconic 1980s puzzle

Rubiks cube Battenberg cake

I've been trying to complete a Rubik's cube since I was about 10 years old - on and off you know, not constantly, it's hardly been a 'life's work', I have done other things, like going to school, getting a job, leveling up my warrior on Guild Wars and shopping for pens. Anyway, what I am trying to say is that I have found the Rubik's cube to be a tad tricky, and the one and only time that I have managed to match up all the sides is when my brother had one, and I dismantled it and put it back together again.

In honour of Erno Rubik, the inventor of the Rubik's cube, and in celebration of his 67th birthday, Vicky, foodie and writer of S'tasty took the humble Battenberg cake and gave it a very geeky twist. Vicky (and her other half) dyed sections of Victoria sponge cake the traditional six colours of the Rubik's cube - white, red, blue, orange, green and yellow. Then the sponges were cut into rectangles, and with a bit of maths and engineering, they were carefully glued together with a lot of blackcurrant jam before being wrapped up in a large sheet of marzipan, to keep the Battenberg element of the cake intact.

Erno Rubik was so pleased with his tribute, he emailed Vicky just two days after she posted pictures of it on her website to say "Thanks for the nice birthday surprise which sweetens the bitterness of passing time."

Vicky has also kindly published the full recipe for her super Rubik's Battenberg on her website so that you too can amaze your friends and family with a truly unique cake.

This post did remind me of Kerstin Rodgers's rainbow cake that I wrote about a while ago. However, all this talk about cake has made me fancy a cup of tea, so I'm going to go and put the kettle on and make a brew.
