Gertie the Dinosaur, Winsor McCay, 1914

Category: Watch and Listen

Gertie the dinosaur

Winsor McCay was an American cartoonist and animator. His two best-known creations are Little Nemo (1905-1927) and Gertie the Dinosaur (1914).

In Gertie the Dinosaur, Winsor McCay not only interacts with Gertie, but he climbs into his own cartoon, and takes a ride on his Dinosaur's back at the end. For this animation, he would have had to have prouduced 10 thousand individual drawings, hand-drawing in the background for every single one. McCay is not as well known as perhaps Disney, but his work was ground breaking.

4 years later he went on to produce the even more ambitious The Sinking of the Lusitania, in which he produced 25 thousand drawings.
